The signal from Comcast is now solid and has been verified to have virtually no jitter (about 1-2 ms). Exchanging the ethernet cable between machines did not resolve and using a different modem port didn’t either. Our other laptop, a Toshiba, has had no issues. We’ve finally isolated it down to this device.
It has been a real pain isolating this issue because I was also having service provider issues through Comcast. I can use the laptop in WiFi mode, but I prefer not to when financial transactions are involved. I disabled that option but it has not resolved the issue. The device manager was set to allow the computer to automatically turn off the controller to save power. The machine shipped in December with Windows 8.1. The machine is a Dell Inspiron 7737 laptop with the Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller on the MB. Most of the time, unplugging and replugging the ethernet cable fixes the problem, but not always. The controller has the latest driver but randomly disconnects. I think it was just throwing a temper tantrum.There was a thread last year about this controller.

Do I need special software with Windows 7 to get this working, or is it built-in? I've seen these two registry keys mentionedĪ couple of hours later, and it worked this time. I think I'm going to keep the new NIC anyways, and see if I can get a load-balancing setup going on it in concert with the old NIC. Then on a whim, I tried attachingĪnother cable to the old NIC again, and to my surprise, the old NIC was working at full-speed again! In fact, I had both NICs working at gigabit speeds, on two separate ports of the same gigabit switch simultaneously! I have no idea how it got working again,Īny more than I have any idea why it stopped working in the first place. Everything was working normally on the new NIC, like it used to under the old NIC.
After I bought the add-in NIC, I moved the cable over to the new NIC from the onboard NIC, of course.

I do use this computer as a home server, behind the router so a lot of media files get shared out over this computer to otherĬomputers on my network, for example. Regarding whether the new NIC somehow made the old NIC work again, I doubt that's the case, it's probably just a coincidence. That link seems to be about load balancing RPC calls over HTTP, so it seems to be a rather specialized scenario of load-balancing.
